Parmigiani succeeds with its new pieces in the Toric collection presented at the latest Watches & Wonders trade fair in Geneva, particularly with its Split-Second Chronograph. To deliver visual harmony, the manufacture has opted for 18-carat rose gold as the leading star on this exceptional timepiece. The noble material has been used to craft the hand-grained coffee-colored dial, the 425mm-diameter case, the hands and many components among the 254 required to assemble the hand-wound movement. The whole, enhanced with an ivory-colored alligator leather strap, gives this minimal design a highly refined personality.

Short-time measurement is displayed clearly thanks to dedicated counters and the central seconds hand. The presence of a second central hand offers the possibility to read intermediate times. The PF361 caliber (65-hour power reserve) with a frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour precisely orchestrates this function by way of a double-column wheel. Pressing the pusher integrated into the crown fixes the split-second hand, while the central seconds hand continues its rotation. The same operation instantly repositions the two hands on top of each other. After the Hijri Perpetual Calendar in platinum that was rewarded at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in 2020, the manufacture now proposes a colored variation.

According to Muslim tradition, the day on which Mohammed left Mecca for Medina, in 622, marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. This event, named Hijra, meaning exile, gives its name to the Hijri calendar, which is based on lunar cycles. Unlike its Gregorian counterpart, the Hijri calendar only has 354 days and is made up of 12 months of 29 or 30 days. Thanks to the complex PF009 caliber, Parmiginiani achieves the feat of orchestrating the main data of this time measurement system within the new Tonda PF Hijri Perpetual Calendar . Thus, on the viridian green dial decorated with a delicate barleycorn guilloché pattern, the counter at 12 o’clock displays the 30-year cycle (19 common years and 11 abundant years). The counter at 3 o’clock shows the current month. The last one, at 9 o’clock, displays the date. The whole is completed with a display of the moon phases at 6 o’clock on an aventurine disc.

All of this data is housed in a 42 mm-diameter steel case topped with a chiseled 950 platinum bezel. This slim,11.20 mm-thick case, waterproof to depths of 100 meters, offers ideal protection to the selfwinding movement, assembled with 310 components. This mechanism also provides a power reserve of 48 hours. The sapphire-crystal back of the case reveals the openwork oscillating weight and the traditional decorations that adorn the bridges and the mainplate. Practical for everyday use, the Tonda PF Hijri Perpetual Calendar has an integrated metal strap to create a perfect match.

Watches & Wonders Geneva 2022 revealed a number of surprises. Among them, those concocted by Parmigiani aroused considerable interest. Indeed, the Tonda PF collection brilliantly revitalizes the manufacturer’s offer. Minimalist and yet highly refined, the watches with built-in wristbands are a welcome alternative for lovers of fine timepieces seeking a sporty chic model. At the end of 2022, the range was judiciously expanded to include three gender-neutral references, the Tonda PF Automatic 36mm. This version is smaller in diameter than the original, which comes in a 40mm case, yet it has all the same aesthetic and technical features. The timepieces acquire increased finesse, being only 8.60mm thick.

Also, each dial presents a delicate “Grain d’orge” guilloche pattern adorned with baguette-cut diamond markers. Three chromatic variations are on offer. For models combining a steel case with a platinum bezel, a “silver sand” or “warm grey” shade is offered. For the pink gold versions, a “deep ruby” matches the sunny nuances of the precious material of the case. All Tonda PF Automatic 36mm are powered by the PF770 caliber. A great scenario starts off with an original concept coupled by personal know-how. Once the important details have been laid out, the finalized narrative structure is in place. With its Tondagraph Slate, Parmigiani reproduces these key steps and center stages an exquisitely-refined, state-of-the-art engineered chronograph. As such, the leading players of this composition hit the limelight on a slate-gray-colored “rice-grain” guilloché dial. An opening at 6 o’clock offers the tourbillon all the space it needs to express itself. The symmetric, inseparable small seconds at 9 o’clock perfectly balances the 30-minute totalizer at 3 o’clock. The Fleurier-based watchmaker unveils a flamboyant new creation hosting a flying tourbillon and center staging not just one but two rainbows of precious stones.

Although unicorns have been calling the trend shots over the last few years, rainbows on the other hand have been popular since time immemorial. Legend has it that at the end of this fascinating optical phenomenon, which symbolizes joy and merriment, there’s a pot filled with gold. Even if this belief is based on fantasy, a rainbow is still a magical sight to behold. Following in this talisman’s footsteps, Parmigiani’s Tonda 1950 Tourbillon Double Rainbow watch adorns not just one but two photometeors, one reproducing the classical color scheme and the other presenting a reverse layout.

This timepiece’s dazzling white-gold face is strewn with brilliant-cut diamonds of different sizes, added using the snow-set technique, i.e. some 573 gems totaling 1,402 carats. Like a scintillating bubble, the aventurine-fashioned dial, off-centered towards 2 o’clock, conjures up a starlit sky encircled by a rainbow of 31 baguette-cut colored stones. In sum, 4 rubies, 3 orange and 5 yellow sapphires, 5 tsavorites, 5 blue sapphires, 4 amethysts and 5 pink sapphires totaling 0.31 carats. A cut-out at the bottom of this large navy-blue orbit harmoniously embraces the aperture which reveals the 60-second flying tourbillon. At the center of this enchanting scenescape, the two skeleton delta-shaped hour and minute hands hover over elongated indexes.

These displays are powered by the PF517 caliber, an ultra-slim self-winding movement set at 3 Hz, delivering a 48-hour power reserve and nestling in a rose-gold case. This case, measuring 40.20 mm in diameter and 9.43 mm thick, is topped with a second rainbow boasting 40 colored gems (2.50 carats), once again baguette-cut. A fabulous marriage which unites 6 blue sapphires, 6 amethysts, 5 pink sapphires, 4 rubies, 6 orange and 6 yellow sapphires, and 7 tsavorites.

Parmigiani’s Tonda 1950 Tourbillon Double Rainbow is complemented by a Hermès-designed red alligator strap and clasped by a rose-gold ardillon buckle.

The 2019 SIHH will soon be opening its doors, and the watchmakers from Fleurier will be presenting a new version of a watch made by Michel Parmigiani 21 years ago.

In 2017, at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), Parmigiani launched the Toric Chronometer, a contemporary reinterpretation of the first watch designed by its founder, Michel Parmigiani, in 1997, some 20 years earlier. Now, just a few weeks before the 2019 SIHH, the brand from Fleurier is back with a second version of this emblematic timepiece, the Toric Chronometer Slate.

Your eyes are first attracted and even hypnotised by the engraved guilloché pattern on the slate-grey dial. The face of the Toric Chronometer Slate is covered with an engraved line called the “grain of rice”, with a concentric pattern made by hand and recalling the scales on a pine cone. Above this surface inspired by the beauty of nature, there are two delicately open-worked, luminous, spear-shaped hands made of red gold to show the hours and minutes on the applied Arabic numerals. A central hand with a crescent-moon counterweight takes care of the seconds. The date appears at 6 o’clock in a large fan-shaped counter. The dial is encircled by a fluted bezel with knurling made by hand using a tool that carves grooves directly into the metal.

The various functions are driven by the calibre PF441, an automatic movement with chronometer certification by the COSC. With the help of a double barrel, it supplies the watch with up to 55 hours of power reserve.

This new Parmigiani watch has a 41mm-wide red gold case. It is worn with a Havana-brown alligator-leather strap, equipped with a red-gold tang buckle, and is made in the Hermès workshops.
