His son Thierry, current President, follows in his father’s footsteps and pays tribute to him as the end of the year comes around with a limited-edition watch infused with the firm’s unrivaled spirit. The Minute Repeater Alarm Ref. 1938P-001 embraces the philosophy of this manufacture driven by excellence. Its black Grand Feu enamel dial stands out with a miniature painting representing a portrait of Philippe Stern. Traditional Breguet-type hands hover over this handcrafted scenescape. This elegant composition is complemented by a small seconds set at 6 o’clock. All these elements are hosted in an elegant 41 mm-diameter, 14.2 mm-thick case.

A discreet aperture at 3 o’clock provides details of the current musical choice. In other words, thanks to the new R AL 27 PS caliber, the fortunate owner of this timepiece can find out what time it is through the minute repeater complication or by setting an alarm. This upgrade of the most complicated timepiece the Geneva manufacture has ever marketed unveils novel adornments. In a nutshell, the reference is more elegant.

In 2014, Patek Philippe showcased a masterpiece of its know-how with its Grandmaster Chime limited edition. 20 complications consorted with each other inside the case. As it was so successful, the model became a collection two years later and, above all, center staged five acoustic functions. This year, the Grandmaster Chime 6003GR-001 watch invites to discover a reinterpretation of its elder sibling with two brown opaline dials featuring the complication displays. On the hour face, a hand guilloché-engraved “Clous de Paris” pattern sets off the watch’s classical look. This decoration also adorns the caseband. A matching-hued patinated alligator strap attached by a folding clasp completes this variation.

The model’s rose gold and white gold 47.7 mm-diameter, 16.07 mm-thick case hosts the high-performing, sophisticated hand-wound 300 GS AL 36-750 QIS FUS IRM movement, assembled using some 1,366 components. During the 2023 edition of Watches & Wonders, Patek Philippe showcased its ranges in a pretty judicious way. The manufacture also headed off the beaten tracks by playing with sporty-chic codes center-staged in three novel Calatrava 6007G references. The trio shares the same ebony-black dial boasting a checkered pattern conjuring up the carbon one of racing cars. This decorative touch is perfectly replicated on the calfskin strap. All three are crafted around an elegant 40 mm-diameter, 9.17 mm-thick white gold case, waterproof to depths of 30 meters. And, what’s more, they all flaunt snazzy-looking time-data display scenography achieved through a three different vibrant colors.

In a nutshell, a dash of sunny yellow dresses the 6007G-001’s direct-drive, indexes and minute tracker, as well as its strap’s stitching and lining. A racy red stands out on the 6007G-010. Catering to demanding travelers is second nature to Patek Philippe. The manufacturer accordingly offers multiple models in its collections featuring a two-time-zone display operated by two central hour hands. The Calatrava 5224R-001 shares the same nomadic genes, although, a welcome development differentiates it from previous models. Indeed, on the elegant blue dial rises an hour rim composed of 24 applied numerals. This configuration, combined with the Super-LumiNova^® coating, makes it possible to read the time data with great accuracy in all light conditions and to easily distinguish day from night.

All indications, including the seconds hand, are precisely synchronized by the caliber 31-260 PS FUS 24H, with a 48-hour power reserve, displayed through the sapphire back. Equipped with a mini platinum rotor, this self-winding movement is remarkable, among other things, for its thinness of only 3.7mm. Thanks to its compact dimensions, the Calatrava 5224R-001 is housed in a rose gold case, fully polished, with a diameter of 42mm and a height of 9.85mm. The customary correctors built into the case middle have been replaced by an ingenious patented system controlled from the crown in the intermediate position. The Geneva-based manufacturer introduces a left-handed chronograph. Produced in small series, this rare timepiece has all the attributes to seduce the most demanding collectors.

In 2010, Patek Philippe unveiled the CHR 27-525 PS Q caliber. What made it so special? This evolution of the CHR 27-525 PS combines two prestigious complications, a split-seconds mono push-button chronograph with a perpetual calendar. This complex hand-wound movement assembled using 473 components is also remarkable for its thinness of only 7.3mm. This exceptional mechanism, endowed with a power reserve ranging from 38 to 48 hours, has been driving the 7372P model since 2017. Now it also integrates the new reference 5372P-01 that nevertheless possesses some notable distinctions. The time display and its controls, crown and push-button, are reversed within the elegant 38.3mm diameter platinum case.

Hence, on the anthracite dial with its black gradient, the date hand is positioned at 12 o’clock, the small seconds at 3 o’clock, and the moon phases at 6 o’clock. As for the 60-minute chronograph counter, this is located at 9 o’clock. The day and month apertures are located at 3 and 9 o’clock respectively. The watch is completed with day/night and leap year indications. Within this setting, with its vertical satin finish and dark tones, the white numerals and hour markers stand out to provide excellent readability. One of the rare watches signed by Patek Philippe, designed around a steel case measuring 40.5mm in diameter and water-resistant to a depth of 120 meters, the Nautilus Travel Time Chronograph 5990/1A-011 introduces a new look for the end of this year. After the 5711 left the catalog in February 2021, having been unveiled in 2006, which Nautilus model could replace one of the manufacturer’s most iconic timepieces? Patek Philippe brings the suspense to an end by presenting the new 5811/1G-001. This watch can be distinguished from its predecessor by its white gold case, which is 1mm larger, 41mm. Its lines pick up on those conceived by Gérald Genta for the original 1976 design, the reference 3700, as does its two-piece construction. Water-resistant down to a depth of 120 meters, this case houses the emblematic blue “sunburst” dial with black gradations decorated with Super-LumiNova® coated markers. This luminescent material lights up the duo of hour and minute hands in the darkness. Moreover, we find the date window positioned at 3 o’clock.

All time data is orchestrated by the 26-330 S C caliber featuring 35 to 45 hours of power reserve. The stop seconds system of this self-winding movement, an evolution of the 324 SC, guarantees precise time setting. With a design inspired by a 1945 reference, the Quantième Perpétuel 5320G-011 by Patek Philippe dons a new look this year, featuring a rose gold opaline dial. This addition highlights the vintage style inherent in the model. The triple gadroon brackets also harken back to the Art Deco style. For the rest, this new variation follows the scenography inaugurated with the 5320 watch presented in 2017. Thus, a double window at 12 o’clock enables the reading of the day and the month. Blue is making its way onto every wrist. The manufacturer addresses this trend by unveiling a new version of its cosmopolitan timepiece endowed with a platinum machined case.

In 2016, the reference 5230 signed Patek Philippe, evolving from the 5110 and 5130, serves as an invitation to travel in business class. Reviving the display imagined by Louis Cottier in the 1930s, twenty-four time zones can be easily read on the dial in the blink of an eye. The principle? A graduated 24-hour disc with a day/night indication is encircled by another disc on which the names of the main related cities are indicated. Their synchronized rotations enable a quick and easy reading of the respective local times. After the 5230G-001 variation in white gold, this year’s model, the 5230P-001, combines a dark azure dial with a delicate circular guilloche pattern in the center with a platinum case measuring 38.5mm in diameter and 10.23mm thick. At the top, a pair of hands indicates the reference time.

For this refined variation, the slender 240 HU caliber, beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, is at the helm. As with the off-center gold micro-rotor, the beautifully finished components of this self-winding movement with a 48-hour power reserve are revealed through the sapphire caseback. The manufacturer incorporates the principle of high fidelity by miniaturizing the combination of amplifier and diaphragm speakers and modifying it to increase the output power.

Since 2005, the watchmakers and engineers of Patek Philippe’s “Advanced Research” division have been conducting research into the use of new material. After focusing their work on escapements and balance springs, this unit decided to explore the field of sound, with the objective of finding a way to significantly increase the volume of a ringtone. The “Advanced Research” Fortissimo watch ref. 5750P incorporates these latest innovations.

The adopted solution takes the form of a module referred to as fortissimo. It consists of two mechanisms, one playing the role of an amplifier, the other of a diffuser. The notes emitted are spread out via a lever. Then they propagate through a 0.2mm thick sapphire machined vibrating plate before escaping through the four openings of a titanium ring. The maximum duration of the 32-stroke chime at 12:59 p.m., which is usually 17-18 seconds, was further extended by 3 seconds to allow the tones to resonate a little longer. This innovative structure is housed within the R 27 PS caliber. A few changes were also made to this self-winding movement. The steel of the hammers was replaced by platinum. This same material was selected for the oscillating weight to reduce its thickness. The sapphire back of the 40mm diameter case provides an opportunity to admire, among other things, these elements in action. Exclusive in more ways than one, this ref. 5750P is a limited edition of only 15 pieces.

In terms of information, the manufacturer brings together for the first time two useful complications: a second time zone and an annual calendar.

Hence, the days and months appear in their respective aperture at 12 o’clock. At 6 o’clock, a small second hand displays the moon phases in a window. The date can be read below this window. Two indications on the dial, “local” and “home”, provide information about the day and night. To indicate the hours of the two different time zones, a pair of hands, one solid, the other openworked, enables the wearer to maintain their temporal reference points when traveling.
