For the 4^th time since the beginning of their collaboration, the watchmaking brand in Nyon is supporting its ambassador and the association working to save these large mammals with an exclusive edition.

The rhinoceros, a herbivorous mammal with a large body covered in thick brownish skin and short, chubby legs, is a threatened species, some of which are on the brink of imminent extinction. It is a victim of human hands obsessed by the lure of profit. The reason for this poaching? The horn or horns of this peaceful animal, a solid mass of keratin perched on its snout, to which some people attribute various fanciful virtues. SORAI, the acronym for Save Our Rhinos Africa & India, is an association founded in 2018 by former cricketer and Hublot ambassador Kevin Pietersen to fight for the protection of this giant weighing around 4 tons. The Nyon manufacture is reiterating its support with the creation of a 4^th dedicated timepiece, the Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon 5-Day Power Reserve SORAI.

In keeping with the collection’s own codes, this exclusive edition, produced in just 30 pieces, features a curvy tonneau-shaped case (42mm), machined in taupe ceramic, including bezel and caseback. Polished and bead-blasted, this shade oscillates between grey and brown, inspired by the rhinoceros’s epidermis. It frames a transparent face that reveals the architectural graphics of the hand-wound HUB 6020 caliber. This 3hz movement provides a spectacular 115-hour power reserve (approx. 5 days), indicated at 8 o’clock, and drives a tourbillon at 6 o’clock, in addition to the off-center hours and minutes at 3 o’clock. This elaborate, one-of-a-kind fine watchmaking piece saw the light of day in the manufacture’s workshops thanks to an original concept proposed by an apprentice watchmaker, Loris Spitzer.

A two-toned globe, offset towards 9 o’clock, on the varnished Obsidian dial of IWC‘s Portugieser Hand-Wound Tourbillon Day & Night, completes its revolutions in 24 hours on its own axis, totally in tune with the rotations of the golden hour and minute hands. At the same time, a flying tourbillon twirls in one minute at 6 o’clock. Even though this device, imagined to limit the effects of the Earth’s gravity, flaunts some 56 components, it only weighs 0.675 grams. To optimize its running, its parts are topped with Diamond Shell^® technology. This silicon-diamond coating significantly reduces friction while improving energy transmission to the inner workings of caliber 81925. As such, this hand-wound movement delivers a comfortable power reserve of 84 hours. The existence of a sapphire-crystal caseback invites to admire its baseplate decorated with circular Côtes de Genève designs. The regulating device and the stylized portrayal of Earth are also unveiled in their entirety.

This mechanical architecture reigns inside a 42.4 mm-diameter, 750/1000 Armor Gold^® case. This alloy, comprising 75% pure gold stands out from red gold through its greater hardness and resistance to wear and tear. Its warm hues, emphasized by its polished and brushed finishes, marry harmoniously with the dark black scenography. The Parisian maison takes a new ride into high horology territory by combining two complex mechanisms in one watch – a three-axes tourbillon and a minute repeater – offered in rose gold or platinum.

Each timepiece imagined by Hermès carries with it aesthetic references, generally linked to its past, perfectly in tune with the playful spirit with which the Parisian company approaches the question of time. These faithful, mischievous notes, placed here and there, turn up onto the Arceau Duc Attelé watch, the model presented at the Geneva Watches and Wonders trade show and limited to 24 pieces with a 43mm-diameter case in rose gold and 24 in titanium. This timepiece showcases the brand’s technical expertise, while retaining its signature stylistic touch.

It combines two complex mechanisms: a three-axes central tourbillon, with three different rotation speeds (300, 60 and 25 seconds), fitted with a titanium triple cage featuring the double H, symbol of the marriage between Emile Hermès (1878-1951) and Julie Hollande in 1900 (1878-1961), and a minute repeater with tuning fork, i.e. two elongated U-shaped arms that run along the flange and are struck by two hammers with a horse profile at 6 o’clock, diffusing a particular musicality thanks to the sapphire crystal bridge. This duo of devices is integrated into the H1926 caliber, a high-frequency (5hz) hand-wound mechanical movement with carriage-like gears that delivers a 48-hour power reserve. This stored energy is indicated at the bottom of the dial, which is decorated with navy aventurine glass or a graphic guilloché pattern evoking sound waves and tinted  anthracite. Two peripheral blued hands run around a wide ring on which Arabic numerals in the typography typical of the Arceau collection display the hours and minutes.

Through this one-of-a-kind model produced in a 33-piece limited series, the Friends whisk short-cycle time measurement off to a new dimension that wows and entertains.

With its Legacy Machine Sequential EVO in 2022, MB&F expanded the horizons of timekeeping in a watch. By embracing two chronographs, this new model boasts independent, split-second, cumulative, and lap-timer mode. And, thanks to upgrading it with a flyback function, it can now sequence series of time measurements easily and ever-so quickly. On top of the visual enchantment sparked when discovering this new LM Sequential Flyback Platinium, a yearning to play with the pushers dotted around the middle of the 44 mm-diameter platinum-sculpted case reigns.

Its complex manual-winding movement, assembled using some 619 components, delivers a power reserve of 72 hours. A display on the watch back lets the wearer know how much energy’s left. This caliber meticulously drives the ballet of the chronograph hands, as well as the hour and minute ones, ticking by on a tilted disc at 6 o’clock. And, just like with traditional chronographs, each pair of seconds and minutes counters comes with its own buttons. The fifth pusher set at 9 o’clock and known as Twinverter, “controls both chronograph systems, operating as a binary switch that inverts the current start/stop status of each chronograph. This means that if both chronographs are stopped, pressing the Twinverter causes both of them to start simultaneously. If they are both running, the Twinverter makes them stop. And, if one is running and the other is stopped, the Twinverter stops the one that is running and starts the one that is stopped”, specifies the brand. Time has never been this fascinating.

With this fifth opus, the brand brings a fascinating saga begun in 2010 to an incredible close, hand-in-hand with the Majorcan tennis player, 14 times winner of the French Roland-Garros.

14.64 grams, rubber and textile strap included, 11.5 grams without. To create the lightest tourbillon watch possible and achieve this result beyond belief, Richard Mille built on its know-how and focused on daring state-of-the-art options. In the RM 27-05 Flying Tourbillon Rafael Nadal, every gram and every millimeter has been taken into account thanks to finite element calculations and a host of simulations.

The structure of the RM27-05 manual-winding movement benefits from 4,000 hours of R&D. The barrel that’s less than 1 mm high was taken from one of the brand’s finest creations, the RM UP-01 Ultraflat Ferrari. Here, it was turned into a flying one for this piece. Richard Mille watchmakers also borrowed the one-piece skeletonized mainplate from this model yet made savvy changes to it. These choices mean this device is remarkably compact, just 2.12 mm thick, weighing in at 3.79 grams.

Reducing the volume of the case meant going for a slimmer case middle and monobloc back. The use of Carbon TPT^® B.4 was perfect for finalizing the project. This material also boosted the rigidity of all the components. Moreover, it also breathed life into never-seen-before architecture with an unscrewed caliber. Compared to Carbon TPT^®, this material is 4% more dense, the fiber 15% stiffer and the resin 30% more resistant. As such, the watch has beaten yet another record. This 80-piece limited series is insensitive to shocks of up to 14,000 g!

Although ultraviolet is invisible to the naked eye, it takes on a violet hue when exposed to a source of artificial light. On the Openworked Tourbillon Ultra Violet watch by Speake Marin, it offers a unique visual experience. The futuristic design born from the inspired stroke of Eric Giroud and the fine watchmaking caliber in this limited series create a striking display. Inside the grade 5 brushed and polished titanium case, a satin-brushed and rhodium-plated dial decorates a flying tourbillon, a micro-rotor and a barrel drum. These elements play a major role in this layered composition, which is both minimalist and sophisticated. Each one is highlighted by curved lines decorated with a luminous magenta obtained with PVD coating. To ensure optimum readability, the Big Ben-type hands are coated in white Super-LumiNova^® with blue emission.

For the occasion, the 12.35mm-thick case comes in two sizes. Four pieces come in a 38mm-diameter, while five others come in a 42mm-diameter. Visual harmony is achieved, whatever the dimensions. The sapphire crystal case back reveals the finishes of some of the 290 components required to assemble the caliber SMA05, which integrates a tourbillon cage weighing around 0.56 grams. This self-winding movement delivers 72 hours of power reserve. Ideal for appreciating the fascinating spectacle offered by the rotations of the regulating device.

In his Hymn to Beauty, Baudelaire proclaimed to make “the universe less hideous and the house less trite”. Parmigiani succeeds with its new pieces in the Toric collection presented at the latest Watches & Wonders trade fair in Geneva, particularly with its Split-Second Chronograph. To deliver visual harmony, the manufacture has opted for 18-carat rose gold as the leading star on this exceptional timepiece. The noble material has been used to craft the hand-grained coffee-colored dial, the 425mm-diameter case, the hands and many components among the 254 required to assemble the hand-wound movement. The whole, enhanced with an ivory-colored alligator leather strap, gives this minimal design a highly refined personality.

Short-time measurement is displayed clearly thanks to dedicated counters and the central seconds hand. The presence of a second central hand offers the possibility to read intermediate times. The PF361 caliber (65-hour power reserve) with a frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour precisely orchestrates this function by way of a double-column wheel. Pressing the pusher integrated into the crown fixes the split-second hand, while the central seconds hand continues its rotation. The same operation instantly repositions the two hands on top of each other. The sapphire crystal back on the Toric Split-Second Chronograph reveals the mechanism in action within an arabesque architecture. It is fine art.

Right from the start, when he was still learning the art of watchmaking in France, the young Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823) stood out for his mechanical aptitude, precocious erudition and rare intelligence. Once established in 1775 in a workshop on the Quai de l’Horloge in Paris, Breguet’s technical inventions and aesthetic language quickly earned him a solid reputation and a prestigious clientele both inside and outside France.

Among the illustrious personalities who bought the work of Abraham-Louis Breguet, famous women were seduced by the instruments he developed: Queen Marie-Antoinette (1755-1793), wife of Louis XVI (1754-1793), Empress Joséphine (1763-1814), then her daughter Hortense (1783-1837) and her sister-in-law Caroline Murat (1782-1839), younger sister of Napoleon I (1769-1821). For the latter, and at her request, the master watchmaker invented the first wristwatch, which he delivered in 1812 and whose main features inspired the Reine de Naples collection almost two centuries later. This family of timepieces, whose personality is so powerful that each model is perfectly identifiable, not least thanks to its oval case, is not the only one to pay tribute to the strong bond between Abraham-Louis Breguet and his customers. Indeed, although the trend is to do away with categories based on gender, the eponymous brand’s offering includes certain timepieces – always mechanical, often adorned with precious stones and sometimes featuring complications – with contained dimensions clearly intended for feminine wrists. The references Classique 9085, 8068, 9087, 9067, Marine 9509, 9517, 9518, or 7035, 7038 from the Tradition family, or, more exceptionally, the extraordinary Les Volants de la Reine, L’Orangerie, among others, are proof of this attachment.

This watch, the star of the show at Watches & Wonders 2024, defies time. Its caliber integrates a new 400-year gear and also ensures millions of years of moon-phase precision.

With its Portugieser Eternal Calendar, IWC masterfully illustrates its expertise when it comes to imagining calendars. On its elegant white-lacquered dome-shape dial, this reference displays the data of a secular perpetual calendar. The date, weekday and month are ever-so easy to read on the sapphire-crystal counters. The four-digit year is unveiled in its respective aperture set at 7:30. Inside this watch’s 52640 caliber, a groundbreaking gear, assembled using eight components, makes a full rotation once every 400 years. Thanks to this mechanism, the model takes three irregular leap years of the Gregorian calendar into account over this four-century period.

What’s more, the existence of another reduction gear train equipped with three intermediate wheels pushes back the limits of Moon phase precision. A state-of-the-art computerized simulation was used to finalize this device. This system offers the Double Moon^TM display incomparable accuracy over 45 million years for the northern and southern hemispheres.

The watch’s time data is completed by a small seconds and a power reserve indicator. The latter informs the wearer how much energy is left of the 7 days delivered by the selfwinding movement which hosts two barrels. When black consorts with yellow gold, style becomes inevitably elegant. The latest variation of the brand’s most alluring watch illustrates this impeccably.

Since 2019, the LM FlyingT has been forever enthralling the ladies with its suave features and precious materials. After a version flaunting a lapis-lazuli face, then one in malachite and another in tiger eye, MB&F showcases a novel, incredibly-pure variation where an intense-black onyx stone espouses the warm hues of a 38.5 mm-diameter yellow gold case. Unlike a traditional dial, this one is shaped like a dome boasting variable thicknesses which take the mechanism-inherent technical particularities into account. The 60-second flying tourbillon reigns in its somewhat thicker center. The hours and minutes are still displayed on the 50°-tilted subdial set at 7 o’clock, ticked over by a pair of golden serpentine hands. The Unico 1242 calibre saw Hublot overcome the challenge of gaining independence and joining the watchmaking inner circle in 2010. The movement is designed to be a kinetic work of art in perfect synergy with its cases. The outstanding finish and open dial mean each and every component has a part to play in the look of the watches. This year has seen Hublot unveil the 1280 calibre and open up a world of possibilities for the automatic movement with a flyback function. The movement has slimmed down, from 8.05mm to 6.75mm, so it can fit more contemporary and versatile 42mm cases.

But the brand hasn’t sacrificed its outstanding performance and has a comfortable 72-hour power reserve. Patented innovations have also gone into the 1280 calibre’s structure. It’s now smoother to wind, so a unidirectional gear train deactivates the barrel to avoid any risk of breakage. There are other changes in the Unico. They all dial up its strength and sturdiness. Expect improved accuracy and shock-resistance. The silicon escapement means it’s impervious to magnetic fields.
